The following guide answers the popular question – What are RGN Trailers?
Have you ever been driving down the road and seen an Oversized Load sign with a huge piece of equipment on it? The trailer you saw was likely an RGN Trailer. But, what exactly is an RGN trailer?
RGN stands for Removable Gooseneck Trailer. RGN trailers are a type of flat deck trailer, similar to a lowboy trailer. The main difference between a standard lowboy trailer and an RGN trailer is that the RGN trailer has a removable gooseneck that can be lowered and removed, which creates a ramp for loading and unloading.
What types of cargo can Removable Gooseneck trailers carry?
Removable Gooseneck Trailers are designed to carry long and tall cargo that is too large to fit in an enclosed. Most commonly, RGN trailers are used to haul cars, trucks, and heavy machinery. The ramp on RGN trailers is ideal for any self-powered cargo and heavy equipment, including cranes, loaders, compactors, generators, large trucks, pile hammers, and more. With the ramp on RGN trailers, you can drive your equipment or heavy machinery right up on the trailer.
Are there different types of RGN Trailers?
There are different types of RGN trailers, including single drop, double drop, and hot shot loads.
Single-drop RGN trailers drop down at the front of the trailer and remain flat to the end of the trailer. Because they drop down and are low to the ground, they are great for carrying tall loads. However, if you need a trailer that’s even lower to the ground, you should consider a double-drop trailer.
A double-drop RGN trailer (lowboy trailer) has two drops in deck height. Double drop trailers have a well in between the two axles that are extremely low to the ground. The end of the lowboy trailer is slightly higher than the well but lower than the front, giving it two different levels. Lowboy trailers are ideal for hauling tall loads.
Hot shot loads are time-sensitive freight that can be delivered with smaller trucks and trailers to easily accessible locations.
How many axles do Removable Gooseneck Trailers have?
RGN Trailers can have as many as 20 axles or more to support up to 150,000 pounds of cargo weight. The typical length of the main deck of the RGN trailer is 29 feet, meaning that RGNs are ideal for transporting the largest types of equipment.
Hauling heavy equipment on a removable gooseneck trailer puts a lot of wear and tear on the trailer’s axles. If you own an RGN trailer and need your axles replaced, contact the axle specialists at BlueSwift Axles.
