This article answers the popular question: What is my trailer axle’s weight capacity?
The load capacity, ‘weight rating’, or your trailer axle’s weight capacity should be listed on the trailer VIN plate or sticker that lists the VIN number. The axle may also have a tag or plate on it that will list the weight capacity.
If you are unable to locate the VIN plate, sticker, or axle tag, the weight capacity of the axle can also be found by measuring the diameter of the axle.
The list below gives you the axle weight capacity based on the axle diameter:
- 1,000-lb – 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch – 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000-lb – 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter
If you can’t locate the tag and don’t want to crawl under your trailer to measure your axles, you can also call your axle manufacturer. They can look up your axle order in their system. If your trailer was pre-owned or if you’re unsure who the axle manufacturer is – give BlueSwift Axles a call. We will ask simple details such as the bolt pattern measurements, brake size, and bearing part numbers to determine what size axle is on your trailer.
